Hostgator 404 Redirection Issue
If you are a webmaster and have hosted on hostgator, you may have noticed that, if your page does not exists, hostgator, places its own page, which kind of advertises hostgator.
Here is how the page looks like
You may however like to redirect the person to your own home page, instead. Here is what you need to do
1. You need to modify the .htaceess file in the home directory of the page. Note that you may not be able to see the .htaccess file using ftp. You may have to log in using the cpanel. You can login to your cpanel of hostgator using yoursitename.com/cpanel. Go to file manager. Check the box that says Show Hidden Files (dotfiles).
2. Add the following line in .htaccess file
ErrorDocument 404 http://referencedesigner.com
Of course replace http://referencedesigner.com with your home page or any other page where you want to redirect the person.
Now you are all set. Check it by visiting a not existing page of the website.
